Peter Raphael Castro is an artist/designer currently residing in New York City.
Born in Queens, NY in one of the most diverse area codes in the nation Peter grew up embracing the diversity around him. During this time Hip Hop was on the rise and naturally embraced the culture and started his journey in the arts doing graffiti, logos, and flyers for friends and local crews. Motivated to further a career in the arts he went on to study communication design in Miami eventually heading back to NYC to finish studies at Fashion Institute of Technology. While still in school he began freelancing at Revlon, creating graphics for showrooms and packaging. He eventually transitioned to retail, creating ads, in-store signage, and window displays in SOHO. A great learning experience that enabled him to experiment in environmental design in a very creative and fast paced environment. After about two years he landed in Brooklyn at Macy’s photo department on Fulton St.. Within 5 years he went from a photo assistant building sets and retrieving merchandise to styling, shooting, and retouching product shots for Macy’s national catalogues and newspapers ads.
It was during this period that he and his wife had their first child. It was the motivation needed to start a clothing line for young contemporary women called Princess of the Posse. Before Social Media was a thing, a small international buzz garnered attention from some top stores and celebrities. Eventually, with such a diverse skill set, he landed at the Guggenheim Museum. From 2011–18 he designed and oversaw production and graphic installations for the institution including over 25 world class art exhibitions in New York and at our affiliate locations like Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain. He is now currently freelancing and continues to
My creative approach—no matter the medium—is to create a point of tension to find the story that exits outside the borders of the image. I do several iterations on each point and usually end up refining the one I find most controversial. Ultimately, it’s about creating the most impactful and memorable images.
