Concept & DesignMaurizio Cattelan’s “Some” Coloring book
Created as a limited-edition publication to accompany Maurizio Cattelan: All at the Guggenheim Museum, Maurizio Cattelan: Some reimagined the exhibition catalog as an interactive, collectible object. Rather than documenting the show conventionally, the book translated the exhibition’s singular installation into a playful, participatory format—one that invited visitors to engage physically with the work.
The publication captures installation views of the exhibition rendered in black-and-white line drawings, transforming the Guggenheim’s rotunda—where nearly every work Cattelan had produced since 1989 was suspended from the oculus—into a coloring and activity experience. The drawings and activities distill the exhibition’s radical refusal of linear narrative into an equally unconventional printed object.
I conceived the project, developed the concept, and designed the book in its entirety, creating the majority of the illustrations as well as all activity prompts, puzzles, and written content. A small number of illustrations by Chad Kloepfer, originally featured in the exhibition catalog, were re-used to reinforce continuity with the broader publication ecosystem surrounding the show.
Produced as a 32-page, staple-bound book measuring approximately 10.5 × 8 inches (26.7 × 20.3 cm), the publication was printed on paper selected specifically for coloring and tactile use. Published by the Guggenheim Museum in 2011, Maurizio Cattelan: Some functioned as both an accessible entry point into the exhibition and a standalone art object. Today, it exists primarily as a collector’s item—an ephemeral extension of one of the most iconic museum retrospectives of the last decade.
