Lead Graphic DesignerGutai: Splendid Playground Invitation
Inspired by Tanaka Atsuko’s Work (Yellow Cloth) (1955), I designed an invitation that translated the Gutai movement’s spirit of experimentation directly into form. Rather than paper, the invitation was printed on yellow fabric, with exhibition details silkscreened directly onto the cloth.
Each fabric piece was folded into a square and housed in a custom envelope, allowing recipients to physically interact with the invitation and even hang it—mirroring the participatory ethos of the Gutai artists. This approach was unprecedented for the museum and required careful coordination across sourcing, fabrication, and printing.
Drawing on my background in apparel production, I personally sourced the fabric, worked with a Manhattan cutter to size the pieces, and collaborated with a Brooklyn silkscreen studio for printing. The final invitations were praised for their inventiveness and became keepsakes, extending the exhibition beyond the museum walls and into the hands of its audience.
