Van Gogh–Picasso: The Thannhauser Legacy

Designed remotely from New York, Van Gogh to Picasso: The Thannhauser Legacy was developed in close collaboration with curator Megan Fontanella and the Bilbao team. The exhibition centered on the Thannhauser Collection and required a contemporary visual approach that could activate historical material without competing with the artwork.

The architectural space featured large central cubes, which I reimagined as dark, graphic focal points—transforming them into blackened volumes wrapped with historic black-and-white imagery overlaid with subtle, atmospheric color gradients. The treatment introduced depth and contrast, giving the exhibition a sense of quiet drama rather than brightness or spectacle.

I developed the full graphic system for the exhibition, including title treatments, didactics, labels, and wall texts. A trilingual typographic structure was carefully designed to maintain legibility while avoiding repetition fatigue. The result was a restrained yet contemporary exhibition language that elevated the collection and translated seamlessly across languages and cultures.
