Hayao Miyazaki Retrospective

As Creative Director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, I oversaw the museum’s complete visual ecosystem—from permanent collection galleries and rotating exhibitions to identity systems, education materials, donor signage, events, marketing, and institutional design. The Hayao Miyazaki retrospective was one of the museum’s inaugural temporary exhibitions and a key public moment within that broader framework.

Presented in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, the exhibition marked the first North American museum retrospective dedicated to Miyazaki. I defined the visual strategy for the exhibition and guided its graphic direction through critical design decisions and approvals, ensuring alignment with both the exhibition design and the museum’s emerging institutional voice.

A defining moment was the exhibition’s 80-foot-long by 20-foot-high title wall, conceived as a landmark gesture within Renzo Piano’s architecture—designed to set a visual standard for the museum’s opening program and future exhibitions. The exhibition’s visual logic extended beyond the galleries into invitations, events, marketing, digital platforms, and retail, reinforcing a cohesive public presence across departments.
